A group of prisoners at Birjand Central Prison in South Khorasan Province have announced in a public message that they will join the “No to Execution Tuesdays” protest campaign starting Tuesday, November 25. They stated that, in solidarity with other prisons participating in this movement and in opposition to the issuance and implementation of death sentences, they will begin a hunger strike. With the addition of Birjand Prison, the number of prisons that have taken part in this campaign in recent months has now reached 55 across the country—an indication of the widespread opposition among inmates to the increasing use of the death penalty.
According to sources inside the prison, Birjand inmates emphasized that their protest is not limited to political or ideological cases. Instead, they described it as a stand for the “right to life” of all prisoners, regardless of their charges or backgrounds. In their message, they described the “No to Execution” campaign as a collective effort to halt the judiciary’s “policy of death,” asserting that their protest will continue as long as executions remain a tool of repression, intimidation, and punishment.
