The Women’s Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran strongly condemns the criminal death sentence issued against Goli Kouhkan, a 25-year-old woman who has been imprisoned since the age of 18 and is the mother of one child. The Committee calls for urgent action to prevent her execution.

Goli Kouhkan, a young woman from the deprived Baluchi community, was forced into marriage at the age of 12 and gave birth to a son at 13. Following a domestic altercation that resulted in the death of her husband, she was sentenced to death by the judiciary. She has spent seven years in Gorgan Prison, and reports indicate that her execution may be carried out soon.

Goli Kouhkan is first and foremost a victim of the criminal clerical regime and its medieval laws, under which child marriage is institutionalized. Her execution—after years of imprisonment beginning at age 18—underscores once again the brutality and misogynistic nature of this regime.

The Women’s Committee urges the United Nations and relevant international bodies—especially the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran and the Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women—as well as all human rights and women’s rights organizations, to take immediate action to prevent the execution of prisoners sentenced to death, particularly female prisoners.
