Vitaly Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv and former world boxing champion, has written a letter urging authorities to stop the execution of Mohammad Javad Vafaee-Sani, a 30-year-old Iranian boxer and political prisoner held in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad.
Vitaly Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv and former world boxing champion, has written a letter urging authorities to stop the execution of Mohammad Javad Vafaee-Sani, a 30-year-old Iranian boxer and political prisoner held in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad.

Vafaee-Sani was arrested following the November 2019 protests and later sentenced to death by the Mashhad Revolutionary Court.


According to Klitschko, Vafaee-Sani has spent more than five years in prison, enduring torture and solitary confinement, solely for participating in the pro-democracy protests of November 2019 and for expressing support for the democratic opposition, including the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI / MEK).
